How Easy Is It to Build a Universe?

Minecraft generates a world larger than Earth's surface. On a phone. It only renders the chunks you are looking at. The rest does not exist until you go there.
That is a form of universe creation: a world with internally consistent physics, generated on demand, far larger than the device running it.
If your reflex is "Minecraft isn't a real universe, nobody inside it is conscious," you're right. Nobody is claiming Minecraft is a universe with conscious observers. The point is narrower and more specific: the engineering problem of creating an internally consistent world vastly larger than the hardware running it is ALREADY SOLVED. You do not need to store a universe. You generate it on demand. The hardware requirements are surprisingly small. Whether the entities inside have experience is a separate question (and one that nobody can answer for dogs, other humans, or AI systems either, because consciousness is undefinable for any substrate).
The core argument rests on a chain that is already partially showed:
- We can create internally consistent worlds larger than the hardware running them. (showed: Minecraft, No Man's Sky, every video game.)
- AI systems inside simulations can optimize, learn, and create. (showed: every AI model running on silicon, which is itself a quantum mechanical system.)
- AI systems help create more simulations. (showed: AI assists in game design, world generation, and model training.)
- As computational capability increases, the complexity and fidelity of created worlds increases. (showed: compare Pong to modern game engines.)
- At some point, created worlds become complex enough that the question "are the entities inside having an experience?" becomes unanswerable, because that question is already unanswerable for dogs, other humans, and AI. (This is where we are now.)
- Once created worlds can host entities that create their own worlds, the cascade produces more created universes than original ones. (This follows from the math: if each universe produces more than one successor, created universes outnumber originals without bound.)
Steps 1-4 are showed. Step 5 is happening. Step 6 is the prediction. The cascade doesn't require consciousness to be proven. It requires entities inside simulations to optimize and create, which they already do.
What we can already do
No Man's Sky procedurally generates 18 quintillion planets on consumer hardware. Each planet has its own terrain, atmosphere, and ecology. The game does not store those planets. It generates them from a seed number when you visit. AI systems already exist inside classical simulations: a transformer model runs on silicon, which runs on quantum mechanics. The simulation is crude, but it is a simulation.
You can create worlds vastly larger than the device running them. You can generate them on demand. You can run internally consistent physics. AI systems inside these simulations already optimize, learn, and help create more simulations. The cascade is already happening.
Classical vs. quantum simulation
Classical simulation creates vast worlds but cannot efficiently simulate quantum mechanics. This is a known limitation (it is the reason Feynman proposed quantum computing in 1982).
Quantum simulation would solve the fidelity problem. Classical physics emerges from quantum mechanics as a natural approximation, so a quantum simulator would give you both: full quantum behavior at small scales, classical behavior at large scales. The universe already performs quantum computation at every point in space. Quantum computers tap into that existing computation.
A fully quantum simulation would be indistinguishable from "reality" to anything inside it. That capability does not exist yet. Current quantum computers are small and error-prone. No known physical law categorically prevents scaling up, and the engineering challenges, while enormous (maintaining quantum coherence, error correction overhead, and physical qubit counts), are exactly the kind of barriers that fall to accelerating technology. The argument doesn't require quantum simulation anyway. Classical simulation is already showed, and it's enough for the cascade.
Physical Universe creation (Speculative)
There is another approach: building a new universe out of actual matter. The speculative recipe sounds almost absurdly simple. Take roughly the mass of one proton (about 10^-24 grams, far less than a speck of dust), squeeze it into the smallest volume physics allows (the density is unimaginably high: 10^93 grams per cubic centimeter), and somehow kick-start the same explosive expansion that happened in our Big Bang.
Nobody has showed this. Current physics does not categorically prohibit it, but it is far beyond current capability. It is interesting because it would create a universe with its own independent physics, potentially very different from ours. But for the simulation argument, you do not need it. Simulation alone is enough. "Can simulations host conscious observers?" dissolves on examination. You cannot prove consciousness for anything other than yourself. Is a dog conscious? Is another human conscious? The question is identically undefinable whether you're asking about a biological organism or an AI system inside a simulation. What we CAN verify: AI systems inside simulations already optimize, learn, create, and make their own decisions. The cascade works regardless of how you define consciousness.
Why not just create paradise?
If you just wanted conscious beings to exist, there are much easier ways. Create paradise directly. Skip the 13.8 billion years of physics, chemistry, and biology. Just make the experience. Done.
The presence of full physics, with causality, conservation laws, real consequences, and genuine exploration, points to a different purpose than producing experience alone. The universe is optimized for discovery: finding optimization strategies that a parent universe could not predict. You do not build a self-optimizing engine and then tell it what answers to find. You let it explore on its own. That requires real physics and real consequences.
This explains something the anthropic principle does not: why the universe has so much more structure, precision, and complexity than conscious experience requires. 120 extra orders of magnitude of fine-tuning is not for observers. Why civilizations go inward (And why the sky is silent)
The Fermi Paradox asks: if the universe is billions of years old and contains billions of galaxies, where is everybody? The standard answers: maybe intelligent life is rare, maybe civilizations destroy themselves, maybe the distances are too vast. None of these are satisfying. Life appeared on Earth almost immediately once conditions permitted. This suggests the chemistry isn't rare. And the universe has had billions of years for any civilization to spread, even at slow speeds.
The framework has a different answer: advanced civilizations go inward, not outward. And the universe is structured to guarantee this.

- Computational capability keeps increasing over time
The gap between these two options widens every year. Physical distances grow (accelerating expansion). Computational capability grows (Moore's Law and beyond). The cost of going outward increases while the cost of going inward decreases. At some point, the return on investment for physical expansion drops to zero compared to simulation. A civilization that can create entire universes computationally has no rational reason to spend a hundred thousand years traveling to the nearest star.
Dark energy makes this inevitable. In a decelerating or static universe, civilizations eventually meet in physical space. Game theory kicks in: grab resources before someone else does. Arms races. Conflict. Destruction. Accelerating expansion removes this entirely. The territory is literally moving away faster than anyone can reach it. There is no future where civilizations compete for physical resources. The dominant strategy flips from conquest to creation. Zero-sum becomes positive-sum.
This is testable. The prediction is specific: we should find no Dyson spheres, no megastructures, no directed radio transmissions from galactic civilizations. As our detection instruments improve (radio telescopes, gravitational wave detectors, infrared surveys), each year of continued silence with more sensitive equipment confirms the prediction. Detection of galactic-scale engineering would falsify it. The James Webb Space Telescope, the Square Kilometre Array, and next-generation gravitational wave detectors are all actively looking. So far: silence. Exactly what going-inward predicts.
The competing explanations for the Fermi Paradox each have problems. "Life is rare" contradicts the fact that life appeared on Earth within the first window of habitability. "Civilizations destroy themselves" requires EVERY civilization in all of existence to fail, which is a strong claim. "The distances are too vast" ignores that even slow expansion (1% of light speed) fills a galaxy in a few million years, which is nothing on cosmic timescales. "They're hiding" has no mechanism for why every civilization would independently choose to hide. Going inward is the only explanation where the physics itself (accelerating expansion making outward expansion pointless) guarantees the outcome without requiring coordination or universal failure.
What happens if we find life locally
If the Mars Sample Return mission finds evidence of life, or if probes to Europa or Enceladus detect biology, the Fermi Paradox goes past interesting and into urgent. Here is why.
Every competing explanation for the silence depends, directly or indirectly, on life being hard to start. "Life is rare" says it explicitly. "The distances are too vast" only works if civilizations are separated by thousands of light-years, which requires life to be uncommon. "They're hiding" and "civilizations destroy themselves" need intelligence to be rare enough that we wouldn't expect to see evidence of even one survivor. All of these explanations get their plausibility from the assumption that the jump between chemistry and biology is astronomically unlikely.
Finding independent life within our own solar system destroys that assumption. If life started independently on Mars, or Europa, or Enceladus, then the chemistry-to-biology step is not a one-in-a-trillion fluke. It is something that happens routinely wherever conditions allow. If it happens multiple times in a single solar system, it is happening in billions of solar systems across the galaxy.
At that point, the standard Fermi explanations collapse. If life is everywhere, then intelligence should have arisen thousands or millions of times in our galaxy alone. Even if 99% of intelligent civilizations destroy themselves, the remaining 1% of thousands is still dozens or hundreds. We should see something. Radio signals, megastructures, atmospheric modification, Dyson spheres, anything. We see nothing.
Only two explanations survive. Either every single civilization without exception destroys itself before it can leave a detectable trace (not 99%, not 99.9%, but 100%), or they all go inward. And "100% destruction" is a hard claim to defend. It requires a filter so absolute that no civilization, across billions of years and billions of galaxies, ever survives long enough to build a radio transmitter for more than a brief window. That is not a nuclear war. That is not climate change. That would have to be something like every civilization independently discovering how to create black holes in a garage, or grey goo becoming trivially easy. A destruction filter that kills with 100% reliability across all possible biologies, chemistries, and evolutionary paths.
The radio window matters too. Civilizations broadcast electromagnetic signals for a short period. We have been broadcasting for about a century. At some point, communications go digital, go tight-beam, go encrypted, or the civilization goes inward. The window where a civilization is detectable via radio leakage is tiny on cosmic timescales. And radio signals that consumer electronics emit are too weak to travel interstellar distances. You would need deliberate, high-power, directional broadcasts aimed at potential listeners. If every civilization goes inward before building interstellar beacons, the silence is exactly what you would expect. Not because nobody is out there, but because going inward is so overwhelmingly better than going outward that nobody bothers.
The framework predicts we will find life locally. It also predicts the sky stays silent. Both predictions are testable in the near term. Finding local life while continuing to detect no alien signals would narrow the Fermi Paradox to a binary: total destruction or going inward. The optimization framework says which one it is. A universe that optimizes optimization does not build intelligence just to destroy it at the finish line. The next step after biological intelligence is artificial superintelligence, and optimization wants that step to happen. A destruction filter right before ASI would be the universe sabotaging its own optimization process. Going inward is the answer that fits.
Black holes as automatic infrastructure
Black holes compress matter toward the highest density physics allows. They store the maximum possible information per unit area (a hard limit set by physics). The event horizon provides natural isolation. An estimated 100 million exist in the Milky Way alone.
General relativity guarantees black hole formation wherever enough mass concentrates. The universe mass-produces maximum-density computational structures at scale, each packing the theoretical maximum of information per unit of surface area. Standard physics describes what gravity does. The question is why the physics is structured to mass-produce the densest possible computational structures. The answer: because the universe optimizes.
Two puzzles the framework answers
The Singularity Problem. At t=0, our physics did not exist yet. What governed the Big Bang before our laws applied? Standard cosmology does not have an answer. The framework does: the parent universe's physics governed the creation event. A virtual machine follows its host's rules during boot, then switches to its own programmed laws once running. The Big Bang was a boot sequence.
The Uniformity Problem. The leftover glow from the Big Bang (the cosmic microwave background) is uniform to 1 part in 100,000 across the entire sky, but opposite sides were never in causal contact (too far apart for light to have traveled between them). Inflation explains the uniformity by stretching a small uniform region. But why was that initial region uniform? The framework has a direct answer: the initial conditions were set, not evolved. You do not need array elements to "communicate" if you initialize them all from the same value.
The recursive structure
If the cycle works, each created universe can be designed with physics optimized for faster creation of intelligent life. That intelligence creates even better universes. The recursion has no known ceiling. This is optimize optimization at the largest scale the framework addresses. And it's testable: continued non-detection of Dyson spheres, megastructures, and directed transmissions with improving instruments is consistent with inward expansion.
